Aftermath of the Virginia Tech Shootings – Spotlight Campus Mental Health
Let me start by saying that my heart goes out to everyone who lost friends and relatives in the 2007 April 16 shootings on the campus of Virginia Tech. So too many lives have been reduced – a life full of promise, those who have left their mark on this world through any person they loved.
When a tragedy is only human nature to ask “Why?” And demand answers. I’m certainly not trying to point fingers or use this tragedy to further my own political agenda. What I can give is idealistic, maybe, but effective nonetheless: If the regular discussions, open and frank mental health was happening in the halls, colleges and boards of directors across the country if individuals have recognized the urgency and were simply comfortable with seeking professional help for depression, anxiety, stress and anger that they were for things such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer, perhaps tragedies like that which occurred on the campus of Virginia Tech could be avoided in the future.
